About Blake and Kumiko
continued from home page
"I soon discovered that she had previously studied English at an eikaiwa (a conversation school) and really wanted to continue. So on a day-off, while she gave me a tour of Okayama, I helped her with her English and she with my Japanese. Right away we liked each other." So much so that now they are husband and wife, living in Sunny California. Wayne and I are in hopes that they will soon visit Kumiko's second cousin in Washington D.C.,and will drop by for a visit with us Hosiers.
While in Okayama, Blake and Kumiko decided to start their our own school which they named "Alamo". It was located just across the Asahi-gawa.(Asahi river). Blake wrote, "The name was chosen after a visit to the Alamo in Texas where we discovered a stone monument in a garden adjacent to the famous mission front that had been a gift from a visiting Japanese delegation some 75 years before. The writing was in old Chinese which is no longer in use in Japan so Kumiko could not decipher what was written on the stone. At the library we learned that it was a poem, in part commemorating a Chinese war hero who was considered a great warrior in Asian military history. After knowing the story, all prior concern about naming our school 'Alamo' was put to rest."
Blake and Kumiko will always remember the "Alamo" in her homeland though it is many miles from their home here in the United States. But distance knows no boundaries with the friends they made in Japan and elsewhere. Wayne and I are so pleased that they have built this site where old friends can reunite and where new friendships can be cultivated. Thank you, Blake and Kumiko, for remembering all those whose paths have chanced to cross.

On the lighter side, a story of falling sandbags. Let's not forget Boise City!
